Could Erik Ainge emerge from the logjam at quarterback
position and become the New York Jet’s savior. He is related to Danny Ainge so
he probably has the grit to be better than he is supposed to be (remember Ainge
was a role player barely on the Celtics roster before he emerged as one of the
most annoying guards in history).
Remember Ainge came back from a few freak accidents that
would have left most players physical and mental nerves damaged permanently.
His senior year he threw for 3,522 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only 10 picks. He
knows how to get rid of the ball, as he was only sacked 3 times, and can
complete an NFL-type percentage of passes (62.6 percent his senior year).
I know this all came out in the draft. His numbers have been
picked apart and his arm strength, accuracy, and basically everything football
related has been dismantled. He does not have superior arm strength. Well, Chad
Pennington never ahs either and he managed games pretty well before injuries
ruined his career.
People did not buy Jets
tickets thinking they would be seeing a fifth-round draft pick play, but
with Pennington and Clemens only managed to get the team to four wins last
season. They may not be Super Bowl
bound this season (especially with the Patriots in their own division), but
they may be able to make a surprise run at the wild card.
Let’s not forget New
England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady had his entire collegiate career
question, sunk to the late rounds and then broke the NFL record for touchdown
passes. True, nobody is questioning his arm strength. A better example might be
fellow SEC product Eli Manning. People questioned his arm, yet he managed to
get the New
York Giants to the Super Bowl.
This preseason, when Ainge gets throw the ball around in the
fourth quarter for a couple of games, think about it. Chances are you will not
even have to think about football until the baseball season is over with the
Mets playing they are. So by the time they have stopped selling Mets
tickets Pennington and Clemens could already be done and Ainge could by
leading a miracle of his own.
