According to multiple sources, the Jets have acquired former Super Bowl MVP receiver Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers, in exchange for a conditional fifth rounder.

The acquisition of Holmes is the latest of bold offseason maneuvers by Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, who had already made headlines by acquiring running back LaDainian Tomlinson and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

It seems the Jets could have a steal in acquiring talented WR Santonio Holmes for just a 5th round draft pick.

Holmes bolsters New York’s receiving core which already includes former Pro Bowler Braylon Edwards and veteran Jerricho Cotchery.   This move gives the Jets the supreme downfield speed they had been lacking, adding yet another weapon to quarterback Mark Sanchez’s arsenal.

However, the 26-year-old  Holmes does not come without baggage.   The fifth-year veteran has been involved in a number of legal transgressions throughout his young career.   Most recently, it has been reported that Holmes is facing a four-game suspension under the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Last month, it was reported that Holmes was accused of throwing a glass at a woman in an Orlando nightclub, and cutting her above the eye.

The former Ohio State Buckeye is coming off his most impressive statistical season in the NFL.   Holmes hauled in 79 passes for 1,248 yards with 5 TD in 2009.
