OT: Shanahan agrees to deal with Rangers

Brendan Shanahan has accepted a one-year, $4 million contract offer with the New York Rangers, The New York Post reported Sunday.

The newspaper reported Shanahan, a three-time Stanley Cup winner in Detroit, spurned richer offers from the Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. The signing was expected to be formally announced on Sunday, the Post reported.

Shanahan, 37, scored 40 goals for the Red Wings last season. He has 598 goals, 634 assists and 2,378 penalty minutes in 17 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers.

The Post said according to sources, Shanahan sought out an offer from the Rangers after receiving offers from several teams including the Red Wings and Canadiens.

Shanahan would be the second high-profile veteran Detroit player to leave the team in a week. On Monday, longtime Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman announced his retirement.

Always nice to add a 40 goal scoring foward even if he is 37 and in the back end of his career. On another note the Islanders signed Tom Poti...God hes awful.

Not bad , we added a proven sniper ,something we really needed and some more leadership. Now we need more depth on defense.

I think putting Cullen on a line with Shanny and Prucha could really work out best for all. Cullen is a big fast player much like Shanny, IMO his best asset is his playmaking ability with two finishers in Shanny and Prucha i wouldnt be surprised to see a 60+Pt year out of him. 20g 40a

Well, he scored 25 goals last year. Rucchin was the #2 center last year, and he only had 13 goals. He's also a much better skater than Rucchin.

I'd breakup Straka and Nylander. I want another sniper on a line with Jagr - Prucha or Shanahan.

Yes, we sure could have used that in the playoffs.
