This virus is several years old ... there have been patches and fixes to stop it for quite a while. My advise make sure your anti virus and operating system are allways up to date.

    MyDoom A Worm Code Execution
    Severity: High

This attack could pose a serious security threat. You should take immediate action to stop any damage or prevent further damage from happening.

    Description

This event indicates backdoor activity associated with the W32.Mydoom.A@mm worm.

    Additional Information

W32.Mydoom.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with the file extension .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.

When a computer is infected, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, which can potentially allow an attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to its network resources.

In addition, the backdoor can download and execute arbitrary files.

The worm will perform a Denial of Service (DoS) starting on February 1, 2004. It also has a trigger date to stop spreading on February 12, 2004. These two events will only occur if the worm is run between or after those dates. While the worm will stop spreading on February 12, 2004, the backdoor component will continue to function after this date.

NOTE: This worm is also known as Novarg, Win32.Mydoom.A, Win32/Shimg, or WORM_MIMAIL.R.

It has been observed that the worms W32.Gaobot and W32.RXBot are exploiting this issue to propagate.

mydoom os old, but whatever they did to 'stop spreading' it in feb04 didn't work - our mail filter service, spamsoap.com, still blocks 20-30 attempts a day to get this to our users - that's not a lot, actually - we total like 2500 blocked attempts total daily. just stuff that's out there bouncing around.

if your AV software was up to date, it ahould have warned you and directed you to the removal tool... if not blocked the initial email entirely.

catch is, if you installed / updated after you got the mail and tried to open the attachment, you probably just had the ports open, known to those looking to 'do something', and the file / replication system may have been deleted.

it's tough. if you run windows, you absolutely have to have AV software, you have to keep it up to date, and you have to let it do it's job (don't choose / set less secure options).

mac guys, you really should do the same, particularly if you use filesharing (p2p) software or get frequent attachments from friends. you never know, and you don't want to be the first...

I'm sure that somehow an illiterate computer users got on your machine when you weren't watching. Little sister, grandma, babysitter, whatever. Just like these people can spill apple juice on a Macbook and cause problems, they can click things on a PC and cause problems.

If you don't click email attachments, you don't get viruses.

are you here to tell us that SBIII's PC is immune to apple juice spills? that's good to know, huh SBIII? try it, SAR says it's only a mac problem...

BTW, about 4 yrs ago, i spilled a full 16 oz. cup of hot coffee directly onto my powerbook, in the middle of a huge video project (2/3 of the way through creating a 7 minute film short), and...

    nothing happened.

well, nothing except isired having to change his shorts...
