OT - Help me find the right laptop to give as a gift!

I'm looking for a laptop computer for my Dad for Christmas. Here are the requirements...

    • 1GB RAM (possibly 2GB if he upgrades to Vista in a year or two)
      100GB+ HD
17 inch monitor (he needs a decent sized screen)
      built-in WiFi
      RW DVD Drive
Dual core processor (open to either Intel or AMD mobile processor)
XP (he's used XP for a while so I'm encouraging him to wait a while on Vista)
      Reliable brand
      Trying to stay under $1,000

Let me know what you think is a good deal these days. Thanks.

I got my wife a dual core 15.4" widescreen for $699 and both of my kids 1.8 GHz mobile process, 15.4" wide screen for $499 ea. They all come with 1GB ram, 60 GB harddrive and DVD burners with built in wifi. They emailed me something of a special and I jumped all over it a couple of weeks ago. Inspiron laptops, amd dual core mobile processor. The battery life is about 2.5 to 3 hours.

The Toshiba Satellite M-115, just bought it. $599 at Best Buy or Circuit City, and it's a great comp with everything you'd ever need. Light, fast, and very affordable. The user reviews are stellar as well, google it and you'll see what I mean.

I haven't looked at laptops for close to two years. I need to get a new one pretty soon. Looks like the prices have come down a bit

This is a really good laptop if you're looking for something basic but also capable. I haven't seen one negative in it since I bought it, just a great purchase so far.

Aren't you in graphic design though? You'd probably need something with a little more umph.
