OT: Why is my computer running slow?

Alright...I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop(bought in '05) that has been formatted a couple of times and has not too much of the original Dell software on it...I just upgraded it with 2gb of total RAM...it has a ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 video card and is running on a 2.8ghz Pentium IV processer.

I have problems watching a 2 minute youtube video on this thing. I do a lot of video editing, and before I upgraded the RAM, I thought that that may have been the problem, because I only had 512mb. But now, it runs just about the same as before and while watching any sort of video the system task manager jumps to about 98% after a minute or so, and the computer completely slows with any type of video that I watch or edit...Anyone have any ideas what I should add/upgrade on this laptop to fix this problem?

I really don't want to start a Mac/PC war either, so let's keep that to a minimum....

A few things you can run to clean things up...

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ewido/

Be sure to completely update this software before running any scans.

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

"Analyze" then "Run Cleaner". Reboot. Then click "Fix Issues". Fix all issues. Save a copy of the Registry to the Desktop. I've run this on several systems and haven't ever had a problem with the items they remove. (Never had to restore the saved registry)

    Lastly Defagment your system drive.

But...the major thing to consider here is your internet connection. You state that streaming via YouTube is the same speed as before...and choppy?! Do you use a Wireless Router by chance? Is it secured? I'm wondering if someone is leaching your bandwidth.

I am using a wireless router, and no, I don't think it is secured...

Spyware from porn. Do you think they're putting free porn on the web cuz they're nice guys?

Free spyware removal. Spybot and Lavasoft.

try making a new user account - sometimes that can (temporarily) get rid of the spyware etc.... but it will all come back soon if you don't clean it. download windows defender...

with your upgrade of the RAM, slow generally = viruses & adware

    go to www.download.com and get

    Spybot Search and Destroy

    Lavasoft Ad-Aware

    these are free

run each one several times until you don't get any results

you might have to do this in Safe Mode (an option when you boot) if there are really a lot of bugs in there

The 96% always start threads about viruses, spy-ware, slow computers etc...
MAC users start threads about how much their computers are the ****.

    Say something to that.

It could be the spyware ad ware thing but it could have something to do with your motherboard or video. The CPU usage could run up the way you are describing if the board is overheating. Are all your drivers installed correctly? Make sure you instal the chipset driver.

clean out the system tray so that on startup you aren't loading a bunch of unnecessary programs like aim, aol, quicktime, real player, weather updates and stuff like that. Just keep the essential things in there like your spyware.

I updated my motherboard drivers and cleaned out the startup system tray now and i am running all sorts of video with only between 2 and 8% system usage. Hopefully it will stay that way...

I run a "cocktail" of free programs and I thank them all for keeping my puter running smoothly.

    Windows Defender
    Grisoft's AVG
    Spyware Blaster
    Hijack This!

There are many great freeware programs out there but these four have worked for me.
