Vick Attorney Says Star Quarterback Will Plead Guilty in Dogfighting Case
    Monday, August 20, 2007

    E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
The lead attorney for pro football star Michael Vick said Monday that the Atlanta Falcons quarterback will plead guilty to dogfighting and related charges and will "accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made."

Billy Martin, heading up Vick's legal team, issued the following statement:

"After consulting with his family over the weekend. Michael Vick ask that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with Federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him. Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of Guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologizes again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter. The legal team and Mr. Vick will appear in court in Richmond on August 27th."

Vick's attorneys hope to hear back from National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell's office sometime Monday about Vick's career options, sources said.

Vick's three codefendants in the dogfighting case have accepted agreements to plead guilty in exchange for reduced sentences.

If he didn't plead guilty they were going to ADD more charges.

Report on now...they're speaking with George Smith.

"After consulting with his family over the weekend Michael Vick has asked that I announce today that he has pleaded guilty..."

"Mike has asked once again to apologize to everyone affected by this"...

    That from Vick's lawyer.

They're still talking less than a year.

Not so fast... At best, he could be back for 2009, he's likely to face a 1 yr suspension from the NFL...

On top of that, depending on when sentencing is, it's probably reasonable that he could be out until 2010. At which point, what value is he?

Just remember....the Judge does NOT have to accept the plea-deal. If he thinks it's too lenient, he can sentence Vick any way he sees fit within the sentencing guidelines no matter what deal Vick and the prosecutor worked out.

I hope the judge crushes him, personally. And I hope the NFL bans him for life.

Trust me. Someone will. America loves a comeback. Give it time.

I know I know, he's the most hated guy around, but just give it time. He apologizes, does all the right things, cries on TV, donate money....you'll see. AMERICA LOVES COMEBACKS.

No link? If true, it was his only choice. But there may be a state indictment still to come.

Considering the federal charges that would have been brought on top of the charges he was already facing carry a sentence of up to 20 years, he really had no choice. Considering the distinct possibility that, after a lenghty trial and appeal he would have been found guilty, he really had no choice but to cop a plea.

As far as his football career is concerned, his only hope is that his NFL suspension and jail sentence run concurrently, and even with that he would have to hope that some NFL franchise would risk the wrath of their fans and take a shot on him, which is not a given. He needs to start rehabilititating his image now to have any hope of playing in the NFL ever again.

I predict he'll wind up in the CFL eventually, but his NFL playing days are over (and rightly so).

This was his only hope for resurrecting his career. Accept responsibility and do it fast. They were 95% likely to get a conviction. This way he gets the clock running for a return and he can act contrite and get the story out of the news a little bit. A trial would have been the end of him.

America loves their dogs more than they love comebacks. The ugly nature of dogfighting makes this a stain that Vick will never remove.
