    Rules question...end zone interceptions

Need some rules clarification on interceptions in the end zone.

Lately I have seen a few quys intercept the ball in the end zone and take a few steps, then take a knee once they realize they aren't going to get out of the endzone.

I have always thought once you stated to run, you couldn't take a knee. Is that right?

No, I think as long as you don't leave the endzone, you're fine.

As long as you stay in the endzone, you can take a knee. Once you leave it, you have to run it out.

Intercept it in the end zone and run around for 5 minutes waiting for the entire offense to otackle you. unless you come out and then go back in..............touchback.

Can you run out the back of the end zone?

I think only if your momentum takes you.

I thought it was a bull$hit call too but it was called on the Pats so I didn't care.

    Good question.

I know if your O snaps it out of the back of the endzone or your QB runs out of the back of it, then it's a safety.

If there is an interception by the new lead singer of quiet riot and he then runs out the back of the end zone - I'll say touchback.

Assante Samuel did it last night to lock the game....he ran out the back of the end zone didn't he.

So the back of end zone is different than sides of end zones?

That's different because the Offensive play starts outside of the endzone and ends out of the back of it.

Yes and it sure looked like he could have stopped. He acted like the play was just over and he could go where he felt like it.

The sides of the endzone play to fumbles.
Fumble out of bounds - retain posession.
Fumble out of the side of the endzone - lose posession.

Fumble out of the back likely = the side....it would just never happen..............but did to Leon Lett.....Bebe got them the ball back at the 20.

He sure did, and I honestly didn't think he could do that.

unless you fumble on the hit.

The rules are simple - if you have the ball outside of your own end zone, and get tackled inside it (including going out of bounds in your own end zone) it's a safety.

If you first get the ball inside your own endzone, any tackle in the end zone (including going out of bounds) will result in a touchback.

And to the guy who said you can only take a knee if you are in the end zone - you can take a knee anywhere on the field, and the ball will be dead at that spot. If its in your own end zone (and you didn't retreat into it) its a touchback. If its at the 1 yard line, you get the ball there.
