OT: Why the Mac Book Air disappoints

    1. Slow hard drive (it’s only 4,500RPM)
    2. The SSD is ridiculously expensive (which isn’t entirely Apple’s fault)
    3. The battery not being replaceable is a huge mistake. Road warriors will burn through the “5 hour” battery life in a flash, and then what? …go find a power outlet for your “ultra portable” laptop? What a joke.
    4. Shiny screen for a portable? That will get damaged real quick.
    5. Limited to 2GB of RAM…that’s not enough RAM these days.
    6. The processor is not that fast. Other ultra portables have faster processors in most cases.
    7. 1 USB port …that’s ridiculous these days.
    8. No optical? Yeah ok, we can live…but what if you need to install something “on the go” …you’re screwed.

All the MBA is is an overpriced piece of pretty looking metal. The Macbook Pro is a MUCH better deal for the price, and it’s not even that much larger. Apple messed up on this one big time. There is such a thing as functionality over form…Apple missed that memo.

2GB of ram max? That would be a big mistake imo. USB port prob can be fixed with a hub...if you really need more that use the central power source then you're probably a power user so no, this is not for you. Sucks about the shiny screen but thats a matter of opinion. There is an optical drive available for $99 bucks, but it'll take up your one USB port in the process. Smart users probably won't need to install software on the go though. Is the HD 4500 rpm? I thought it was 4200.

Bottom line is it's not for everyone, but like most Mac products it'll carve out it's nitch. For the price I'd get a Macbook Pro...way more bang for the buck and pretty portable in it's own right. Right now I'm typing on a G4 Titanium powerbook that I bought 8 years ago. Needless to say it still works great and aside of the paint chipping a bit it still looks great too. Mac portables kick serious ass.

you're missing the point here. this is a new product line, not the next gen macbook or macbook pro. the air is not for everybody, and it's not a solo computer. it's a big screen, full function PDA on steroids.

you're not going to run a 10,000 rpm hard drive with no fan. and you're not getting 5 hrs. battery or <1" thick with a fan and an optical drive. you've got to sacrifice some things.
