Cross another one off the list, Panthers Franchise Gross

The Panthers are expected to place the franchise tag on OT Jordan Gross.

It appears Carolina has found its left tackle for '08. Gross hasn't excelled on that side in the past, but he played very well on the right last season. His skill set says he should at least be adequate on the blind side. Gross would have been the top young tackle on the market.

Damn, Im more pissed about this then Suggs, I wanted this kid, hes young and dominant, at this pace, the next offseason can be a good one baring any of these guys sign a long term during the season.

Did people really expect that all the great potential Free Agents would ACTUALLY be available? We all should know by now that doesn't happen, most teams will do what it takes to keep them or protect their asset value (franchising them).

Free Agency will not be the answer to the Jets many and massive talent problems.

Now Carolina and Baltimore don't fit this statement (but both have found a way to franchise their potential free agents anyway), but it was even far more unrealistic to think the big name free agents would actually hit free agency THIS YEAR considering something like 18 teams have $20M or more in free cap space.

People have assumed for months that all of these teams would just allow these players to be free agents... So stupid. Another reminder that this isn't Madden.

Well I guess it's a good thing we saved all of this money then! Keep building strictly through the draft Tangini, maybe we'll be good before I have my first kid!

The salary cap has gone up so much that most teams are able to retain solid players. Which is why if you want a veteran to upgrade a position, you have to go the trade route (as we did to upgrade the RB position last year.)

    bingo.

the old world of numerous quality FAs and no trades is over. because the cap has risen so drastically over the past few years, more and more teams have the room to maneuver - meaning, teams are able to keep their quality FAs, and can hold out to trade players (rather than cut them). While there still should be some quality FAs on the market, it's going to be a bidding war for most- it's a good thing we are in the top third of available cap space.

I would have loved for the Jets to have signed this guy. Saw this coming from a mile away though. Not too many premier FA's are going to hit the market.
