    OT: Blu-ray player help

My mom got this blu ray player for my brother for a xmas gift. She got it for $199.

I just wanted to see if anyone knew much about these, and if its a good deal or not. What would be the difference between this one and one of the more expensive ones? Or even a ps3? Thanks guys

Is a good machine, will do what you need it to do.

It has the new "live" function which most will never use, which is a good thing, but it doesn't play the AVCHD format which is becoming the 1080i HD camcorder file standard.

Either way, its good.....get some Blu-ray discs and enjoy.

Personally, I prefer the Panasonic DMP-35K for a few dollars more.

Almost unanimously great reviews. I just put one in and will be grabbing a second one shortly. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with the Sammy, but the Panny seems to be 'THE' value BluRay player to beat right now.

    Good luck either way.

On a whim, I saw the Sony Blu-Ray player at WalMart Friday on sale for $198 and couldn't pass it up. I figured you can never go wrong with Sony.

By the way, if you play regular DVD movies on a Blu-Ray machine, is the quality better than they are on a regular DVD player? Just curious. I haven't set it up yet.

That is a solid blu-ray player and for that price its a good deal...

The PS3 is the best equip blu-ray player/gaming machine/media hub/ whatever the hell you want you can do with this thing on the market, in terms of feature set nothing is even remotely comparable...I'm not too informed on that particular Samsung model but be careful with older blu-ray players specifically Samsung models...Some of the older models do not have adequate hardware to support firmware upgrades needed to play some newer movies...That model your mother bought to me seems fine but i would go ask somebody more knowledgeable just to make sure...

Personally I went with a PS3 because i wanted a blu-ray player and the kid wanted his video game system, i basically killed 2 birds with one stone...Picture and sound quality wise you can find a better blu-ray player than a PS3 but not that much better and they're all within the same price range of a PS3...All the other things the PS3 does makes it the smarter purchase imo especially if you have kids, its not just a $400 blu-ray player...
