    1998-2008 Jet QBs

I have been debating whether I wanted Favre to return for a second season. As part of my decision making process, I turned to the archives and looked at the QB stats over the past years. Over that span, the Jets have had two great seasons by a QB (Testeverde in 98 and Pennington in 02) and the rest have been mediocre at best. Pennington had four seasons where he threw one less interception than touchdowns. Testeverde had one season where he threw four more interceptions than touchdowns. Both of these players returned the following year. While statistics are not the end all be all of an evaluation, I think that if Favre wants to play here and puts forward a complete effort in training camp, I think he should be given the chance to compete for the starting job. He certainly hasn't been the worst QB to ever take the field for the Jets.

Year Player TD INT YPA RTG %
    98 Testeverde 29 7 7.7 101.6 61.5
    99 Lucas 14 6 6.2 85.1 59.2
    00 Testeverde 21 25 6.2 69.0 55.6
    01 Testeverde 15 14 6.2 75.3 59.0
    02 Pennington 22 6 7.8 104.2 68.9
    03 Pennington 13 12 7.2 82.9 63.6
    04 Pennington 16 9 7.2 91.0 65.4
    05 Bollinger 7 6 5.9 72.9 56.4
    06 Pennington 17 16 6.9 82.6 64.5
    07 Pennington 10 9 6.8 86.1 68.8
    08 Favre 22 22 6.7 81.0 65.7

I prefer to have a young guy in there. Let him have a so-so year while learning. At least we have the hope of an upside. We need to find a guy for the next 10 years not the next 16 games.

To be honest with you, Rat may not have a so-so year. He may play 'lights out'. Of course, we'll never know unless he gets a shot

what? no mirer or foley? the jets have been hamstrung by not having a deep threat. not that chad could ever get the guy the ball but even with testaverde there was no one. they relied on short passes to keshawn chrebet and anderson.
