Shane Lechler reups with Raiders for 4 more years

Raiders and asomugha getting close to poissible longterm deal???

In a stunning development, the Raiders and All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha are close to agreeing to terms on a contract that would keep Asomugha in silver and black for several years and off the free-agent market, two team sources said Wednesday afternoon.

The Raiders have until Thursday afternoon to decide whether to place the franchise tag on Asomugha as a means of protecting themselves against Asomugha becoming an unrestricted free agent Feb. 27. Raiders managing general partner Al Davis and Asomugha said earlier this month that they expected to go the franchise-tag route for a second straight season.

Signing Asomugha to a long-term contract would alleviate the need for using the franchise tag and worrying about losing Asomugha after this season.

It also would put the Raiders in a position to save some much-needed salary-cap room for 2009 because the deal likely would be structured in a way so that the cap hit this season would be less than the $11.7 million or so tied to a franchise tender.

Asomugha has spent his entire six-year NFL career with the Raiders. He hinted late last season that he wanted to go elsewhere if the Raiders didn’t show signs that they were committed to turning around their fortunes. The Raiders are an NFL-worst 24-72 during Asomugha’s six seasons.

Asomugha was so intent upon forcing the Raiders hand that he changed agents late last season, hooking up with top-tier agent Tom Condon.

On Wednesday, Condon and Raiders officials intensified negotiations with the intent of hammering out a deal by night’s end at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Some work remains to be done, the team sources said. However, a deal appears imminent and could be announced Wednesday night.

Asomugha earned his first Pro Bowl selection last season and also was named All-Pro for his stellar play in 15 games. He allowed only eight receptions for 133 yards and no touchdowns.

The Oakland Raiders have re-signed Shane Lechler, who has established himself as the premier NFL punter and among professional football’s all-time greats.

The four-year contract is the greatest ever awarded to a punter in the history of the National Football League.

Lechler, who is coming off his fourth Pro Bowl following the 2008 season, led the NFL with a net punting average of 41.2. He also led the AFC in gross punting average (48.8), which ranked second in the NFL. Lechler’s 33 punts inside-the-20 in 2008 were a career-high, ranked second in the AFC and third in the NFL.

Lechler, the Raiders’ fifth-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2000, also led the NFL in net punting in 2007 and led the AFC and finished second in the NFL in gross punting average (47.5) in 2006.

He has 682 career punts for 31,902 yards in nine pro seasons. Lechler’s 46.8-yard punting average is the highest in NFL history for players with at least 250 attempts. Lechler reached the qualifier of 250 punts during the 11/23/03 contest at Kansas City, where he surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh (45.1).

Lechler, who also has doubled as holder on place kicks, booted at least one punt of 50 yards or longer in every game and recorded 14 punts of 60 yards or longer in 2008. He posted his sixth punt of at least 70 yards last season. His career long is 73 yards set in 2003.
