Matt Stover, the Ravens' kicker for their entire existence, said last night that he is no longer wanted by the team. Stover, a free agent, said he approached the Ravens with an offer he had received from the New York Jets on Monday. The Ravens informed him they were moving on, according to the kicker, 41, the only player remaining from the team's relocation from Cleveland. "At that point, we knew for sure their direction was not to keep me," Stover told The Baltimore Sun last night. "They want to go in another direction." The Jets eventually signed Jay Feely, leaving Stover without a team. According to a team source, the Ravens consider Stover a fallback option. If the Ravens aren't comfortable with their kicker situation, they could ask Stover to return before the regular season begins, the source said.

I believe this story was posted yesterday. The Jets signed Feely after Stover left without a deal and went back to the Ravens with the Jets' offer. End of story.Originally Posted by jr420x

Problem is. He's 41. His kickoffs are dreadfully short and he can't hit 50+ yard FG's anymore. Great kicker at one time. Can still hit 'em 40 and under but so can Feely.

This idea that Feely is substancially better on kickoffs just isn't true. Feely has the reputation for having a rather weak leg as well.
Needless to say though, I'm still glad we went with Feely who is 9 years younger.
The stat sheet I have at my disposal shows Feely with a 64.9 Yards/KO. The list shows only the top 14 kickers in the AFC in that category and Stover isn't on the list. But suffice it to say, the lowest guy on the list is 62.5 so we know Stover is lower than that.

I don't know. I always thought STATS Inc. was pretty reputable.
In recent articles I've read, Stover's short kickoffs are frequently referred to.
Just sign them all...
You have to wonder how many more years Stover has in him before the long arm of osteoporosis finally grabs him.
Not to mention there would have to be a team proctologist on staff.
I would bring back Leahy bore we took Stover!
As a Jet fan who moved from NJ to Baltimore, I've seen quite a few Ravens games. When I first heard this rumor, I immediately thought "oh no, we don't want him." Last season, the Ravens had to bring in a second kicker for long kicks and kickoffs. Stover seems to be a stand up guy, had a great career (when the ravens had no QB, which was most of the time, he was their biggest scorer) but he is ready to retire and has no range.
