Reflections Of My Personal Feelings, Draft Day 2000

With an unprecidented 4 first round picks, it was an exciting day. Well, for a few hours at least.

When we took Ellis, I said "Tuna knows best".

When we took Abraham, I said "ooh".

When we took Becht, I said "what?".

When we took Pennington, I said "NO! OH, NO! NO!"

    Die C.had, die.

The only one I shook my head at was Becht...

It's taboo to say it around here but I had high hopes for Pennington.

He didn't work out, overstayed his welcome and I'm glad he's gone.

But there was a point in time, where I thought, finally...

I went into the office as I had dial up at home in 2000, as did a lot of others I'd imagine...Pete Franklin was the main afternoon Sports jock here, and he was practically guarnateeing Pennington's success in the NFL, and wanted Niners to grab him.

No way I loved the pick (VINN NEEE VINN NEE), but I thought it was a great way to spend an "extra" first rounder...qb of the future.

Penny before the injuries was a good bet.

    That's not taboo.

Its the matter of when we needed to cut bait or fish that separates us all, and it makes me sad.

i could have sworn that we were going to take plaxico, but at the last minute pitt c*ckblocked us..go figure..so much for the the post-draft trade btw us and pitt. at that point they really needed a qb and we really needed a wr.

For a guy who wants franchise QBs, you were against the Jets getting Pennignton? That doesn't make much sense.

Also, I was at that draft - I'll never forget how angry most of the fans were when the Jets didn't draft Pennington at 12/13 and everyone thought the Raiders were going to grab him at 16. That was fun.

Well, now I have seen the future and can go back in time with my x-ray vision and boo the C.had pick.

I was surprised that we took Abraham after taking Ellis at # 12.

I thought the Pennington pick was clever even though I wanted a WR.

I hated the BEcht pick but loved the Coles pick.

Leinart is still an unknown. Like Kellen, not enough playing time, not enough of a body of work to pass complete judgement.

    You were wrong.

Pennington was a perfectly good pick at No. 18. Not a boom, certainly not a bust, but good value.

He quarterbacked the Jets to their only division title in 2002, and got them into the playoffs in '04 and '06. If not for injuries, who knows what he might have done?

He was a good player for us.

Considering this team has spent first rounders on the likes of Vernon Gholston, Bryan Thomas and Anthony Becht, I really don't get the vitriol CP generates.

Don't forget how good Chad P looked before the injuries. We had every reason to believe he was going to be our franchise QB and we were all thrilled when he got the contract to be just that. It's a what coulda been but remember that we coulda done a lot worse.

Unlikely (as we did see him between injuries) but still a solid 'unlikely'.

I wouldn't be shocked if he turned out to be a good QB, and the Cardinals haven't put him on the block or danced with other QB options to date. If Warner goes down (a strong possibility, considering the age) the franchise's fate is in Leinart's hands and if the Cards are good with that, it says something.

What you fail to see is that the team succeeded in spite of Chad, not because of Chad. A better quarterback wins a Super Bowl in '02, stays healthy in '03, and is still in his prime this very day.

Put Tom Brady on the '02 Jets, we win it all, not the Patriots.
