How do we stop Antonio Gates?

This will be the biggest task of the week in my opinion.

Kerrisha is back to her old play. Can Eric Smith step up? Our linebackers have been decent this year in coverage but this is the absolute best in the game.

Lets's hope Rex and Pettine have something special in store.

This has me worried a bit as well. I wasn't going to say anything given how happy we are that we won but KR just does not look right. At the very least he is supposed to be an athletic and fast safety. He looked like he was running in quick sand yesterday. Last week he picks up a fumble that many would have returned for a TD and he got caught from behind. He just looks slow out there right now and that does not bode well when facing the Chargers O.

We will have to get pressure on Rivers with our guys winning one on one match ups. I am afraid if we have to blitz all the time to get pressure, Rhodes will get abused.

Put Hollywood on him. He pretty much shut down Gonzo 3 weeks ago and the TD he got he wasn't on him. Put Kerry on him, and then if he gets owned, double him.

Why is this even a question, it'll be mostly Rhodes, like usual.

Well since you anwsered his question so well we might as well just dump this thread!

Good question JV, Its going to be incredibly tough, he's the best in the game at his position So there's going to have to be a variety of coverages with a lot of Db's stepping up. If he gets 1 on 1 he will run past anyone not named Revis.

Im not saying he is the answer, but Eric Smith is a good defender vs other TEs..wrs are not his forte, but against TEs he is above average for sure.

I think we play a hybrid Def this week, which is why the injuries to Stickland and posisbly lowery are so huge. SD is not a running team and we need to D-up vs their WRs and Gates. We need to play a 2DL, 4LB, 5DB set and rush Rivers with a variety of blitzes from LBs and DBs......and keep as much coverage as possible.

    It's gotta be Rhodes.

I love how most people here on JI kill Rhodes, but he's been great in coverage this year (2nd Pats game he was shaky). Leonhard would just be too short, IMO, it's best to have him blitzing and maybe helping Lito with Floyd.

Rhodes....trying to tackle Antonio Gates.. HAHAHA. We need somebody physical on Gates. not our slow, overpaid, underachieving Safety.

We've pretty much shut down every TE we faced. You can make an argument that Rhodes tackles soft, but he plays great coverage.

yeah thats exactly what he is

rhodes is a big reason why this defense has been playing on such an even higher level the past 4 weeks...he wont have to worry about tackling him if he doesnt let him catch the ball

Like I was saying in another thread:

Our Pass Defense has went up against elite pass catching TE's such as Shockey, Winslow, Gonzalez and Clark this season. Those 4 pass catching TE's combined for 14 catches, 149 yards and 1 TD this season against ourDefense.

Thats only an average of 3.5 catches, 37 yards, 0.25 TD's per game.

Gates may be explosive, Gates is an elite talent, But our Pass Defense can at least contain Gates, he won't beat us.

    Other TE's:
    Owen Daniels: 4 catches 44 yards, 0 TD's.
    Ben Watson: 3 catches, 23 yards, 0 TD's.
    Alge Crumpler: 4 catches, 59 yards, 0 TD's.
Anthony Fassano: 4 catches, 38 yards, 1 TD.
    Shawn Nelson: 2 catches, 34 yards, 0 TD's
    Zack Miller: 2 catches, 15 yards, 0 TD's.
    Anthony Fassano: 2 catches, 16 yards, 0 TD's.
    Marcedes Lewis: 2 catches, 58 yards, 0 TD's.
    Chris Baker: 0 catches, 0 yards, 0 TD's.
    Dante Rosario: 4 catches, 62 yards, 0 TD's.
Jonathan Stupar: 1 catch, 1 yard, 0 TD.
    Daniel Coats: 1 catch, 12 yards, 0 TD's.

Those were the other 12 TE's that we've went up against this season. Our Pass Defense has been lights out against opposing TE's this season. Rhodes has done an amazing job against these TE's. One mistake against Lewis and thats it.

Those 12 TE's only had an average of 2.4 catches, 30 yards, 0.08 TD's per game... Lights out.

Gates will not beat this Jets Defense. Jackson will not beat this Jets Defense. If they cant run the ball, they won't have a chance for Offensive success.

WE HAVE THE BEST PASS DEFENSE IN THE NFL, PERIOD!

if its the WR or the TE it doesnt matter...they have to worry more about how they will throw on us rather then how we are going to stop them
