Childress on '06 romp, signal stealing
    October, 25, 2010

    By Mike Reiss
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots host the Vikings on Halloween, almost four years to the day that they hammered Minnesota 31-7 in a highly anticipated "Monday Night Football" game.

That contest, played on Oct. 30, 2006, was on Vikings coach Brad Childress' mind when he spoke with reporters Monday.

The context of Childress' remarks came when he was asked about getting cornerback Chris Cook more into the mix, and if it was a concern that it comes in a week against quarterback Tom Brady. He then started to talk about the '06 game, taking the opportunity to call the Patriots "some of the all-time great signal stealers."

"It was like a surgical procedure," he said of the '06 contest, according to comments from a team-issued transcript. "Thatís back when we used to signal [plays] and things like that. I remember having a conversation with [former Vikings defensive coordinator] Mike Tomlin about that. These were some of the all-time great signal stealers. In fact, thatís what was going on. They were holding, holding, holding. We were signaling from the sideline. They were good at it. Itís like stealing signals from a catcher."

Childress said that if the signals were picked off, and relayed to quarterback Tom Brady, it was a devastating combination.

"If you know that as a quarterback, thatís as good as you can do," Childress said. "And they did as good as they could do."

Brady was terrific that night, going 29 of 43 for 372 yards and four touchdowns, as the Patriots overlooked the run in favor of a spread-them-out passing attack.

When it comes to signal stealing, which is less prevalent now with the coach-to-defender communication device, Childress said that his teams would try to do the same thing.

"Itís something that we do as well. Itís good for one; itís good for the other," he said. "We didnít change it up. We didnít use wristbands. We didnít change the menu at halftime. They were good at that. Obviously you donít need to give Tom [Brady] any added advantage."

So I guess we can now expect the Patriots to run up the score this game.

If Favre has a 2+ turnover game the score won't be close for sure.

Stealing signals, if they're visually watching the hand signals and figuring out what they mean, that's not really cheating. Video taping signals is cheating though, and the Pats were certainly doing that as well.

Yeah, thats what it was Brad Childress. Then what is the excuse for Chad Pennington going 29-39 for 339 and a TD against you in that same season? How about your secondary was garbage...just like you as a coach

Several coaches have said that the taping was just like the signal stealing in that everyone was doing it. The Pats were told to stop, Belichick said FU. The NFL said no, FU.

There's a couple of thoughts that come to mind reading this article:

    1) YES, the Patsies are cheaters. They went WAY beyond what any other team has done in an attempt to steal signals and they succeeded for a while. It definitely helped them win games they probably would not have or else they would have given up. They ARE cheaters and should FOREVER be considered cheaters because we still do not know the depths of their cheating ways.

    2) Brad Childress sucks as a Head Coach. As you recall, the Patsies were really a SH$TTY team that year. They had the worst WR's in the league that season. We marveled at how much better Lav Coles and Jerricho Cotchery were than anyone they had playing receiver. Their running game was non existent. Their defense was long in the tooth and gave up way too many big plays. Minnesota losing to them only proves how bad they were. What's worse is that WE beat them with Eric Mangini as our HC.

Multiple teams have been accused of videotaping signals prior to 2007. The Pats just did it after Goodell told everyone to stop in a leaguewide memo. Both Adam Schefter and Peter King said their sources that upwards to 7-8 teams videotaped signals prior to the memo. The summer of 2007 (about a month before Spygate) Don Banks of SI wrote an article on the most common ways teams cheat and videotaping signals was #1 on his list.

The Pats went to the AFC Championship that year and were about 1 minute away from winning that game. They were beating the Colts at halftime of that game 20-3. By the Pats standards of 2001-2007 that might have been a sh*tty team, but they were pretty good even without a primary WR.

Hmmmmmmmm, lemme see.....EVERYONE was doing it.

Is that so.......gee those other cheaters must have been really good at it since no one else has accused any other team of doing it, well at least NO SUPERBOWL WINNING TEAM......Hmmm.

That's nice, and keep trying to compare the Moss-less Pats to the 2001-2007 team because it's not even close. You saw Saturday what an aggressive defense will do to a Pats team that has no running game. And their defense can't stop a paper bag, 350 yds from the Chargers with two ball boys playing WR.

C'mon. This is from 2006, we can give it a rest now. The Pats won 3 Super Bowls in the early 2000's but the signal stealing obviously wasn't that big of a deal considering how the Patriots have continued to win Super Bowls since then.

    oh, wait.

That's what I'm thinking. I suppose the Vikings have a chance, but that is all they have is a chance. They have to run AD, and perhaps, take advantage of the element of surprise with Tarvaris Jackson as there is minimal film on him recently. If Favre plays, the Pats win for sure.
