He has been in bad shape all year on the post game shows..you can see how he gently turns his neck back and forth..there was an article a few months ago about how he has to lay down in the car as he gets driven to the show because of the pain he is in...you watch these games, no doubt these guys need painkillers at one time or another

Got to give him props, to admit his problem and then publicly discuss it... takes balls.

I wish him nothing but success in his battle.

Well he may be addicted to pain killers and no longer have use of his neck, but at least the NFL offered him a way out of the ghetto.

Great! Can someone forward him Eric Ainge's cell number?

Good luck with the recovery Ray and hope it's successful for you.

How can the Jets with doctors on their payroll and sponsorship from Atlantic Health not take care of Ray Lucas?

Also, in regard to the lockout, people say the owners have all the risks.

I say what risk? The owners have a monopoly. Not much risk. The players take a risk with their health, Dennis Byrd and Ray Lucas come to mind.

He did a radio interview this morning in Miami along with Grimes.

Lucas said he had no health insurance and was taking 10 Vicodins at a time to deal with the pain in his neck.

He became suicidal and credits Grimes with saving his life.

Grimes is taking him straight from Dallas to Palm Beach for detox.

Lucas thinks there are many other NFL alums in similar straits who are afraid to come forward.

I was suprised to hear there is no health insurance for ex-players.

Grimes was a little pissy towards the NFL and its treatment of ex-players.

Geez I hope he gets better soon. Its sad to see these guys deified durinbg their careers then come crashing down to earth and having to deal with these terrible injuries on a daily basis, mostly by themselves. Hope he gets better soon, I like his positive attitude - it'll take him a long way for sure.

    +1
Yep, if this is true, that's nuts. Billion $ product can't even cover the players that hurt themselves building/maintaining the league? That's some BS right there.

So let me get this straight, Lucas has "no health insurance" but he can get a prescription for Vicodins and enough of them so he can take 10 pills a day?

Having no health insurance is a choice. If you make little or no income you can apply for and get HealthPlus. If you do have a median income, you can purchase health insurance on your own.

I sincerely wish Ray all the success in the world in getting off drugs, but the soap box/player platform of blaming your industry of choice for your addiction is not a valid argument for universal healthcare.

    JMHO.

Of course it isn't. I'm actually not familiar with Harrison, and I thought Lucas was from a middle class suburb.

Did you see the ? And click on the link where Canada Steve says players shouldn't complain because that's what the NFL does for them?

Oh, sure. Health Plus is for New Yorkers. And why should lack of insurance prevent someone from getting a prescription?

Obviously, the Vicodin cost less than 'insurance'.

I guess I missed the part where someone was using this as an argument for universal healthcare. How about the NFL ponying up?
