    Our leading tackler this season...

... was Eric Smith with 89. Sickening...

With him it is no sign of quality at all. It just means he gets attacked by opponents a lot and that for a player with so many shortcomings he is on the field way too much.

Very common for a SS to lead a 3-4 team in tackles... Especially one that can't cover anyone. If we ran a 4-3 and our MLB wasn't the leading tackler, that would be an issue. As long as Harris and Scott were right up there behind him, no big deal.

I bet he lead the team in missed tackles as well.

Teams figured out that the way to beat us was attack the edge. That's why Harris didnt lead the team in tackles.

Losing BT hurt, and Calvin Pace is overrated for the money he makes

All great points. Never thought I'd miss BT, and Pace just isn't quite good enough at that one thing he does. Our D took a small but significant step back this yr. Tanny's got some work to do on both sides of the ball.

A safety leading a team in tackles is PROOF that the men in front of him are missing tackles.

Eric Smith is not a bad player...and the fact that the team overused him and asked him to do things he is not suited to is not his fault. the guy is a good tackler and a situational safety...as far as i am concerned i would love to have him back in that role and ST

LOL and what was his excuse the year before? A torn meniscus shouldn't affect speed all that much, it may hurt his ability to change directions slightly. Smith is who he is, a below average safety due to not possessing enough natural ability to keep up with the majority of NFL TE's and RB's.

Our linebacking corp is the weakest link on the defense, the OLB's consistently failed to set the edge and desperately need to be upgraded. I think Bart Scott's got one year left, but we need to draft his replacement this offseason as well.

Victor Green was actually a great player who ahd a nose for the ball. Eric Smith is scrub who got tackles b/c his assignment in coverage (usually a slow tight end) would make a fair catch right in front of him and then he'd have to go bring them down.

Smith and Leonhard both stink. They BOTH need to go like 1 year ago.

If the Jets bring either one of those clowns back for 2012 expect to see us make many more mediocre tight ends look like Shannon Sharpe in his prime.

Agreed. Pace was a let down and didnt step up to the plate.

Smith is best on ST and laying the lumber. However defending the pass isn't his strong suit and is frankly horrid at that.

Green was a good player but great with not even 1 Pro Bowl?? If Green was great what was Ronnie Lott?? And yes Smith sucks that we agree on..
