Post Jets/Giants relationship has become radioactive

Taking Eli Manning off ESPN-1050 is result of growing Jets-Giants airwave war

In early March, Eli Manning hosted an “Evening With Eli,” at the New York Athletic Club in conjunction with ESPN-1050. For eight years, the Giants’ two-time Super Bowl MVP participated in a weekly segment on the radio station.

At the dinner, both Manning and ESPN-1050 suits prominently announced they would happily extend their relationship for several more years. Two weeks later, according to radio and NFL sources, the relationship between Manning and ESPN-1050 was over.

ESPN-1050 was informed Manning would not be coming back as a regular on “The Michael Kay Show.” Instead, he was heading to WFAN, the Giants’ flagship radio station.

By all accounts, Manning did not make this decision on his own. He enjoyed doing his weekly spot and was compensated well. Money was not the issue. Manning also had no problem with the fact 1050 is the radio home of the Jets.

And during his 1050 tenure, no one at WFAN tried to lure him to the station.

Why did the situation change? Who put the kibosh on Manning continuing his relationship with 1050?

All paths lead to the increased flow of bad blood between the Jets and Giants. It finally occurred to Giants brass that having the face of their franchise as a featured voice on the radio home of the Jets was a terrible idea.

Although the Giants walked away from last season on top of the football world, management is still angered over Jet brass covering those Giants Super Bowl logos with curtains in MetLife Stadium before Jets hosted the Giants on Christmas Eve. They also haven’t forgotten how Gang Green put a picture of Manning being crushed from behind by Calvin Pace on the cover of their defensive playbook heading into that game.

“More than all that, I believe (Giants co-owner) John Mara was not exactly thrilled over Eli being on the Jets station throughout the Giants Super Bowl year,” the NFL source said.

The radio whereabouts of Giants players is likely not on Mara’s radar, but we could see how the Manning-1050 alliance eventually stuck in his craw. And if he did ask Manning to make the radio switch, what’s Eli going to say, “No”? Giants ownership has made their QB one of the NFL’s highest-paid players.

Nonetheless, the bad blood thing is still in play. After Manning jumped ship, ESPN-1050 tried to negotiate a deal with Victor Cruz. A source close to Cruz said he was told Giants players were now prohibited from being paid regulars “on a non-Giants station.”

Don’t discount WFAN, tired of the buzz and ratings ESPN-1050 was generating with the QB (remember Kay’s “elite Eli” interview), trying to exert whatever pressure it could to bring in Manning.

Why else, after eight years of not caring where Manning yakked, would the FANdroids now be so eager to sign him?

    See ya! Good Riddance, Eli.
I thought it was going to be us that kboshed it.
BTW, are the VaGianas kidding me? What do they have to be pissed about? They are the luckiest, most blessed organization in sports, the stars align, the heavens open up and every ball bounces their way, they get every call they need, and end up with another SB. And we get s**t on by those same Football Gods, WTF!

don't think this has to do with the Jets vs Giants at all

WFAN has watched their ratings tank since the end of the Giants season as they are saddled as the flagship station of the Nets and the Devils, two teams with about 4000 fans each and NO radio listeners at all while their rivals up the dial have been basking in the success of NY's only two winter teams, the Knicks and the Rangers.

so with the Mets showing promise of another ratings disaster all summer (with two new additions to the DL just yesterday).... they are fighting back with the only ratings boost they can think of, Eli every week and the Giants.

Without that they would be heading down the 25th anniversary road with only A FAT BORE as their ratings kingpin

    Much ado about nothing.

Even the local newspapers are aligned with certain teams. Why wouldn't the radio stations be?

The only thing that suffers is the quality and objectivity of the broadcast and news. But who cares about that anymore?

P.S. sg3, I would love to see proof of WFAN's ratings "tank"ing. Especially fatty's. And we would have to compare them to previous years. Everyone knows that February and March are typically slow months for sports. My guess is you took some liberties with that statement.

WEPN/ESPN 1050 Sees Growth in Keys Demos

By Jerry Barmash on April 5, 2012 3:31 PM

While WEPN/ESPN 1050 is hardly declaring victory, the upstart All-Sports station wants it known that there is growth in them thar hills!
ESPN held a press junket yesterday at the new MLB Fan Cave in Greenwich Village. FishbowlNY met 1050 general manager David Roberts and ESPN Radio SVP and general manager, Mo Davenport.

The WEPN call letters were born in 2003, but ESPN Radio was heard full-time on 1050 dating back to 2001. Despite the powerhouse name attached to the station, WEPN struggled to find its voice, and an audience to hear that voice.

WEPN was born to challenge rival WFAN and to provide a platform to all things ESPN.

Now nearly a decade after officially purchasing the station, ESPN 1050 is pleased to finally make some headway.
“The station is seeing real positive growth,” Roberts tells FishbowlNY.
That growth is specific to two demos–Men 25 to 54 and Men 18 to 34. He says the ratings indicate national morning show Mike and Mike has been in the Top 10 show since the fall. New York-centric afternoon host Michael Kay also cracked the Top 10.

It’s a different story when factoring in the overall 6+ rating. WEPN saw slight gains to a 1.4 in the February Arbitron book but was unable to make the Top 20. By contrast, the ‘FAN had a 3.0.

“Ultimately, we’re in this to win,” Roberts says. “We have a great deal of respect for our competition over at WFAN. But … I have no interest in trying to be like WFAN. They are who they are. I will put my money on being a part of the brand called ESPN.”

However, Davenport admits having the “worldwide leader in sports” hasn’t always translated well in New York.
“Am I satisfied? No,” Davenport (right) says. “I believe that ESPN does a wonderful job of serving sports fans. I think we have room to grow in serving sports fans locally.”
It may be a never ending work in progress at WEPN, but Davenport says they are showing promise toward the future.

“[Roberts] and program director Justin Craig have done a marvelous job of integrating 1050, and I feel like we’re on a right track,” Davenport says.
Unlike at CBS’ WFAN, where the focus is primarily New York sports teams, WEPN offers a balancing act from Mike and Mike to longtime New York Daily News columnist-turned talk show host, Mike Lupica.
“You have names that New Yorkers know, and that they can relate to, whether national or locally based,” Roberts says. “We have diversity representing the people that make up our air from Jared Max starting at 4 a.m. right through Bill Daughtry at night.”

Roberts likes how 1050 is positioned for 2012 and beyond.
“We’re doing it the right way,” Roberts says. ”We’re not going to react to what happens in the marketplace.”

Good fortune follows online as well, Roberts points out, as the ESPN New York Web page now receives more traffic than any sports site in town. Part of the reason, in February to usher in Jeremy Lin, a.k.a. Linsanity with the Knicks, the site had 41 million page views. It was a record until last month when Tim Tebow signed with the Jets.
“Those people also probably sampled the product on ESPN New York 1050,” Roberts says.

Michael Kay has been with ESPN 1050 since the beginning of WEPN. But it’s been an uphill climb for Kay, who is also the Yankees lead TV broadcaster on the YES Network. Kay failed to capitalize on the 2008 Mike and the Mad Dog break up, as Mike Francesa maintains his strong afternoon presence, 23 years later.

Roberts, who assumed his GM duties in 2010, says Kay’s work ethic is key to his ratings, not what happens at the competition.
“In the last year, [Kay] has started to see some steady growth, real positive growth that’s sustanable,” Roberts says. “You don’t necessary want to see a spike driven by one topic or one event. Ultimately, the Michael Kay Show will be successful based on the work that [he] does every single day.”

Roberts cited Kay’s recent first interviews with Tebow and Yankee lefty Andy Pettitte, fresh off his retirement.
“[Kay] is not only a good personality on the air, he’s a good news person,” Roberts says. “He understands the principles of journalism and he understands that will differentiate him from his competitor.”
Also looking to differentiate itself from Francesa, the Kay show has hired former Mets (and current Red Sox) manager Bobby Valentine for a weekly segment with the outspoken skipper.
Another vital player in the Sports/Talk formula is having team play-by-play. ESPN 1050 has been the exclusive carrier of their Madison Square Garden co-habitants–the Knicks and Rangers.

“We are in the final year of the agreement, and we’ll see when we get to the end of the season where we stand,” Roberts says. “We know that they are marquee franchises, and they fit our game plan for the future going forward.”

Fair enough. But for my own knowledge, I would like to know whether or not WFAN is actually tanking. Because that would bring me joy.

I would like to see some proof of Fatty loosing listeners to Kay. Not just GMs and program directors claiming their station is "growing". That is ambiguous. Maybe it is something as simple as new listeners are picking ESPN over WFAN. But is WFAN actually loosing their listeners to ESPN?

What's so great about the giants orgainzation? They are on old school nfl team that gets preferential treatment and they did indeed have a tremendous amount of luck on their side this year.

If Wilson or Cro makes a tackle on Cruz the Giants miss the playoffs and Coughlin doesn't have a job.

But I don't think that was luck. That was two of our players not finishing a play and their player not giving up on a play. That is the NFL.

The Giants do get preferential treatment, but they have earned that. They have seniority and have won. If we won multiple SBs and didn't cause the league unnecessary BS distractions then I think we would be treated just the same.

SAD but TRUE. Although they are the 9-7 GIANTS.

BUT..as my sig has stated for months...... Steelers, PATS, Giants etc... have something , do something that we dont. In 1981 when JETS and Giants both were coming off the respirator, the Giants elevated Parcells, we elevated Walton.

LUCK has little to do with GIANTS success.

The luck came in the NFC championship. Wish we got those breaks

Yep, 2 Lombardi's in 4 years has nothing to do with luck.

their ratings for live sports coverage were way lower after the end of the Superbowl. They are stuck with the Devils and the Nets (it only could be worse if they had the Icelanders instead of the Devils) while 1050 has the Knicks and the Rangers, the two flagship New York winter sports franchises.

I never said that the Fat Pantloads ratings were tanking (although they are down from prior years)

Prospects for a summer ratings boost from the Mets live coverage is also not all that good.

So, my point was and remains --- they have to either play their Football Giant card OR all their eggs will be stuck in the Fat Pig's basket

Nah, Pats have 3 Lombardi's in 4 years, that's better than the Giants.
