    Jets loss to Panthers puts playoff dreams to bed

    CHARLOTTE — Rex Ryan, the eternal optimist and ultimate glass half-full guy, couldn’t even fake it this time.

    The jig’s up.

    The mathematicians may say that the 6-8 Jets are technically alive for a postseason berth with two games left, but Ryan knows better in the wake of a 30-20 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.

    “This one would be Ripley’s (Believe it or Not) if we pull this one off,” the head coach said.

    The Jets need a confluence of improbable events to make the playoffs after a gut-wrenching defeat that followed a familiar blueprint: Inept offense, leaky defense and just enough big breakdowns to doom them.
