NEW YORK -- The Yankees said Thursday they will retire the No. 6 of Hall of Fame inductee Joe Torre, who managed the team to four World Series championships in a five-year run that began in 1996.

Along with his number being retired, Torre will be honored with a plaque in Monument Park, as will two of the players who helped him win those championships. The Yankees will celebrate Tino Martinez's and Paul O'Neill's with plaques in the park as well.

Bernie Williams, another member of those Torre championship teams, will be recognized in 2015.

The Yankees also will put a plaque in Monument Park for Rich "Goose" Gossage, who is already in the Hall of Fame. Martinez's ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, as part of Old-Timers' Day weekend, with Gossage's the next day. O'Neill's will be on Saturday, Aug. 9.

It is only fitting that since the Mets have a retired number of an old Yankees manager, that the Yankees have a retired number of an old Mets manager.

It really is a shame that Yogi and Joe both have those stains of Mets time on their records.

What is a shame and is stained is how the Yankees treated Berra as a manager-Steinbrenner fired him 16 games into a season. That sparked the feud between Berra and the Yankees.

    THAT'S shameful!

Berra and Steinbrenner made amends before George died and Yogi came back into the Yankee fold for years after... so no.

And of course, we forgot the legendary Casey Stengel, who won 7 World Series as a Yankee manager, but then was saddled with a Mets team that even he couldn't prevent from losing 120 games.

OK Potato, we get it, you are sensitive to any Yankee tarnishing. They are the Perfect franchise that you chose to bandwagon

Comparing a team that was a monopoly during the 50's vs an expansion team (when expansion rules were very different) because they had a similar manager, and trying to draw some conclusion from that is the epitome of homerism.

And, just because Steinbrenner made amends with Berra decades later does not excuse what an ass hat he was to Berra, a Yankee legend

Dude give it a rest, you instigate **** and longtime poster like JP gives it back. STFU with your Yankee hating and stick to your Mets thread.

    Bingo.

Dierking, you bring it soft, then point fingers when you get it back hard? Beyond lame.

We get it, people are not allowed to poke the Yankees. It raises the hackles of those who cling to this as their point of living life.

    Most sensitive fanbase in creation.

As to JP-You were the fool that compared an established franchise to an expansion franchise, like it had any substantive meaning. Talk about a "soft" point.

Hurt your feelings-sorry, it is a fact.

Normal folks would not have much to quibble with or be hurt about that, except you have to be the emotional yankee guy. Several in every crowd
