    Riddick Bowe plans comeback

    August 19, 2004
SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) -- Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe is coming out of retirement after a 17-month prison stint, with a scheduled return to the ring Sept. 25.

His opponent has not yet been named for the bout at Fire Lake Casino, the casino said Thursday.

Bowe (40-1, 32 KOs), who turned 37 on Aug. 10, was released from federal prison in mid-May for kidnapping his first wife, Judy Bowe, and their five children in 1998. While in prison, Bowe reportedly lost 50 to 100 pounds on a regimen that included daily 3-mile runs

The heavyweight division is in such bad shape anybody and everyone is anxious to get back in the ring. It does not matter to the state boxing authorities what your record is-prison or otherwise.

Has anyone seen Bowe lately? He has a fight every day. His opponent is his motor skills. He is losing.

Seriously, he is in pretty tough shape for someone his age.

Max I totally agree it's sad to see this guy slurring his words.

I can't believe a boxing commission will let this guy get in the ring again.

I saw him about 6 months ago, may have been more, on the HBO sports show. He explained how he was planning for a come back. What happened was he took his wife and 5 children from their home and held them "captive" down south some where for a few days, something along those lines.

The show chronicle the beatings he took, playing tape of when he was young and coming up. The difference is night and day. He now has slurred speach, is "slow minded" and brute where as before he was a very articulate and engaging young man. I believe he also lost a ridiculously high amount of money much like Tyson which is likely the reason he will continue fighting.

Say all you want, but even though Tyson and Bowe are over the hill and done, a fight between them would be a huge draw and you all know it.

Would you drop $50 to see them fight?

    I wouldn't.

    Tyson VS. Bowe
The promoter would hype it as two guys desperate-their last chance- come back from prison and be a success -I can see this possibility

Bowe has brain damage..to let him further that damage in the ring is criminal. Slurred speech means his brain has been affected by too many blows to the head...a pre-cursor to Alzheimers or parkinson's...
