While JABE is a huge impact player when he plays... one must remain on the field to be a true impact player.

1) He is 1 strike away from some serious trouble with the substance abuse program.

2) 3 out of 5 years he missed games due to injury (some serious time also).

3) He is having a lights out year in a contract year.

The option is tag him or let him walk. Signing him for the money he will demand will be a mistake.

Would you rather have that money spent in the secondary, on a #1 receiver and on a decent tight end... or on a tremendous defensive player who can't stay on the field and has a history of substance abuse?

Tag him or let him walk. Don't commit to any long term deals yet. You can do that if he stays clean and healthy after next year with the tag on him.

We should tag him, and if he gets hurt again, J.Abe will go bye-bye.

It seems like anytime there is a big game, something happens... The Oakland game he gets sick, and the game before the steelers game he hurts his knee. When we need him the most, he's injured

agree.

if we tag him, can we still listen to offers(draft picks, players)?

That is exactly what we need to do. You can count the number of games Ellis has missed on 1 finger...

You have to tag him.

I think some team out there would be willing to give up 2 #1's for a premier DE (even though you do bring up some valid points).

Jets would be crazy to sign him longterm for ridiculous money.

And the team you are talking about is probably the DALLAS COWBOYS, as long as Parcells is still coach, why wouldn't he want a guy he helped draft that has had 2 Pro Bowl apperances? Would be nice to have 3 #1's.

Exactly. We have to tag him. No way can we commit to the kind of money it will take to sign him long term. Not with his history.

Personally, I think we should tag him next year, if he stays healthy and does well, TAG him again, make him stay healthy for a full 2 years, he has yet to do that, if he can do that, then we give him the long-term deal. He said he wouldn't mind being tagged for 2 years, which is exactly what we should do.

The tag is pretty much applied - which is a great decision

force to him to play in one more contract year, see if BT finally develops, and then u can send his ass off

now we're talkin.

i'll take a risk with these 1st rders, we're bound to get at least 1 good player, maybe more.

i would hate to lose abe, but i have a real good feeling that this could happen.

Rolle, Miller, Shazor

then O-line, DT

this is sounding pretty good to me, dont know about anyone else here.

Win-Win situation. We get Abe playing for a contract or 2 1sts for him. No way should we commit long term to him yet.

Imagine that young and talented starting DB core:

RCB-Barrett
SS-Shazor
FS-Coleman
LCB-Rolle

You can also count the number of sacks he's had when Johnny Abe was out of the line-up on one hand.

Abe is a once-in-a-decade pass rusher. Letting him go because he gets banged up is insane. Tag him, make him play hard next year too, and you'll get your money's worth.

I think we all agree that the right move is tagging Abe and letting him play for a contract.
