Miami FL: For the second straight week, the New York Jets had a 14 point lead against a division rival. And for the second straight week, the Jets lost the game. The Miami Dolphins won their third straight game and split the season series against New York with their 31-28 victory.
The Jets had built a 14 point lead thanks to three touchdown passes from Josh McCown. The Dolphins responded with 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. A bad throw by McCown that was intercepted by Bobby McCain with 40 seconds left put the Dolphins at the Jets 20-yard line. Cody Parkey sealed the game with a 39 yard field goal.
The loss dropped to Jets to 3-4 on the year while the Dolphins (4-2) moved into a first-place tie with the Patriots and Bills in the AFC East. It was the first time the Jets lost a game while leading by 14 points in the fourth quarter since Week Two of the 1995 season.
In a game which showed the youth and inexperience of the New York roster, the Jets were flagged for 12 penalties and over 120 penalty yards. Head Coach Todd Bowles was less than enthused with the number of penalties the team committed.
“It was big. It was frustrating. We gave them all the drives in the first half and they kept drives alive in the second half so when you have twelve penalties you aren’t going to win the ball game. We got to many untimely penalties at the wrong time. We had too many penalties on both sides of the ball. Too many penalties period. Until we learn that lesson it’s going to be tough-sledding.”
Now on a two game losing streak, the Jets currently sit in last place in the AFC East. Even with the frustration, Bowles doesn’t see a dip in morale.
“It’s no different than last week. We had an opportunity to win a divisional ball game on the road. We have to start winning on the road if we want to go somewhere. It was a tough game. We have to give them credit. They made plays. Things are going to be positive. It is frustrating but its positive. You pick up your shoes and get ready for the next game and you correct you mistakes. Morale is good. The team is good. The losses are frustrating.”
The Jets (3-4) will battle the Falcons next week at MetLife at 1:00pm.
The Dolphins (4-2) will face off against the Ravens on Thursday Night Football at 8:25pm.
- Buster Skrine was mercilessly picked apart today by Matt Moore and Jay Cutler throughout the game. While Bowles did not pinpoint blame on the young corner, the Jets corner seriously struggled against an offense which was anemic for most of this season. Giving up 31 points to an offense that was last in the league in FIVE different categories is alarming.
- Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye shined today. Maye recorded a beautiful interception in which he jumped a Matt Moore pass at returned it to midfield. Maye has looked far more comfortable in the past few weeks and it showed today. Adams was his usual dynamite self. On one particular play, Adams blitzed the backside of Cutler and deflected a pass at the Dolphin two-yard line. The deflected pass was then intercepted by Muhammad Wilkerson. The play showed just how versatile and great Adams could be in this league.
- Jets fans everywhere are worried about their draft stock now that the team is 3-4 but playing very competitively. They could easily be 5-2 instead of 3-4. It’s also worth noting that this year’s draft class of quarterbacks is one of the deepest we have seen in years with five different quarterbacks possibly going in the first round. Regardless if the Jets have a top five, 10 or 20 overall pick, they will be able to get a very solid quarterback in this years class. Remember, Dan Marino and Aaron Rodgers were late first round picks. Ben Roethlisberger was the 11th overall pick. They can still get a top quarterback prospect and add him to a young core of weapons that have impressed incredibly this season.
