To no surprise, being $20MM+ over the salary cap, the Jets began their roster purge today, releasing five players.
LB Calvin Pace, LB Bart Scott, S Eric Smith, T Jason Smith and FB/TE Josh Baker were let go.
According to several salary cap sources, the moves save the team aprox $30MM on this coming year’s cap and brings them aprox $5MM under.
All players cut (with the exception of Baker) have been discussed in the media for the last several weeks as the first likely bodies to go based on their high cap numbers. The largest being Jason Smith ($12MM cap number) who the Jets traded for Wayne Hunter to the Rams during last year’s training camp. Smith never cracked the starting lineup during his time here.
Although the moves get them below the cap, the team will still have to do more wrangling in order to make any off-season moves. The biggest pressing issue being their star CB Darrelle Revis who they will need to decide whether to extend or trade. Look for some more cuts as well as several veterans re-structuring their contracts to more cap-friendly deals in the coming weeks.
