The Tim Tebow-New York Jet, experiment is officially over.
Once the Jets selected Geno Smith with the 39th overall pick in the draft many had assumed it was the end for Mark Sanchez and his time with the Jets, but as it turns out it’s Tebow who is left without a job.
Now the question becomes, can he find another job in this league?
The Jets have been shopping Tebow around the league, hoping to get at least a seventh-round draft pick in return, but when the only teams that called asked if he’d be open to a position switch, Tebow and his agent said no.
Leaving the Jets to consider keeping him on the roster, then Smith fell further than the Jets ever expected and suddenly there were too many quarterbacks on the roster. Tebow had to go.
Sanchez’s time as a Jet is clearly running out, but with Smith still facing a heavy learning curve and David Garrard’s health always a concern the Jets need to keep Sanchez around. As John Idzik continues to preach his mantra of competition, it’s important that Smith earns the starting job.
If the Jets released Sanchez they’d be just a Garrard injury away from throwing Smith to the wolves before he is ready and has earned the job. Now they’ll let the three quarterbacks battle it out to see who gives them the best chance.
This was a misguided experiment from the start and it was a key factor in Mike Tannenbaum losing his job. This was a failure by the Tannenbaum regime and now that Idzik has drafted Smith, he is distancing himself further from the Tannenbaum regime by cutting ties with one of it’s biggest mistakes (the Sanchez mistake is the next to be corrected).
“We have a great deal of respect to Tim Tebow,” said Rex Ryan in a statement sent out to the media this morning. “Unfortunately, thing did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”
And with one move the Jets can get back to focusing on improving their football team and hopefully the New York media can turn their attention back to the football field as well (we sure will, draft review/wrap-up coming later today).
