Weeks of ineffective play may have finally cost Kerry Rhodes his starting job.

According to various sources, the Jets free safety has been benched by head coach Rex Ryan, in favor of backup Eric Smith.

Rhodes, who back in August proclaimed himself “Kobe”, promising to be a big-time playmaker in Ryan’s system has been a non-factor in 2009.  Through ten games, Rhodes has yet to record a sack, interception or forced fumble.

In what may have been the final straw, Rhodes missed several tackles on Patriots RB Laurence Maroney and passed up the opportunity to lay a big hit on New England WR Wes Welker during Sunday’s 31-14 loss in Foxboro.

More to come as this story develops including reactions from both coach Rex Ryan and Kerry Rhodes….
